Summer has gone, Autumn is here.

Here we are in Autumn, Summer never really appeared, but at least we had sun, warmth and a great time on this months Spokes Ride.

I decided it would be grand to go to Fife again for the October Ride, ignoring the weather forecasts and hoping it would remain sunny. Apart from a little early rain, it did. Whereas the Culross ride could be described as the last ride of summer, the sun continued its late appearance this year for our first ride of autumn, and our last ride of British Summer Time.

Alice came to the fork in the road.
"Which road do I take?" she asked.
"Where do you want to go?" responded the Cheshire cat.
"I don't know," Alice answered.
"Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."
Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Despite 7 people taking a wrong turn at the north end of the Forth Road Bridge, we all made it to Dunfermline. We stopped at Pittencrieff Park, or "The Glen". It is a lovely place to have a picnic, despite a clouds appearance, a great place to relax. There are trees planted by several eminent Victorians, Pittencrieff Park has one planted by the American (Dunfermline) philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Andrew Carnegie had bought the land in 1902 from the Pittencrieff Lairds, and the land was given in trust to the inhabitants of Dunfermline in 1903, and is maintained by The Carnegie Dunfermline Trust. Peacocks residing in the Park have the Freedom of the Park and Dunfermline City Centre.

Perseverance sometimes pays off.

"Think of yourself as on the threshold of unparalleled success. A whole, clear, glorious life lies before you. Achieve! Achieve!" - Andrew Carnegie.

The reason this report is late, and probably a little bald from pulling my hair out, is that I have been messing around with Google Maps, blame the tools I always say. This is the last email to include a detailed textual route description. I will upload data on to the web from my new GPS, and display routes using Google Maps. Each report on the web will now be accompanied with a Google Map, which you will be able to zoom in to view satellite pics of the ride, as well as view maps. Makes my life easier, and emails shorter.

Don't waste a minute.

"I cannot endure to waste anything as precious as autumn sunshine by staying in the house. So I spend almost all the daylight hours in the open air." - Nathaniel Hawthorne

Fortunately the sunny weather has produced an excellent autumn to be out and about on the bicycle. Of course, as November approaches, the weather can turn inclement, especially in Scotland. I am hoping that this autumn doesn't end up like last autumn, or this year's summer, a complete washout. If the day is crisp and fresh, go for a walk in the woods, and listen to the crunch of leaves underfoot, or wheel? I sure you won't regret it, as the colours of the trees are quite vibrant this year.

So here's to the November ride, on the 4th. Please remember to bring lights, not only because it gets dark early, but also because of possible dark weather!!!! I'll endeavour to remember the freebies, which you may well find a useful now that the nights are drawing in.

Warm Regards
