Next Spokes Ride

Sunday 3rd July 2022. Meet at 10:00 outside the Usher Hall, Lothian Rd.

Destination to be decided on Wednesday. Distance will be around 70km (42 miles). Lunch in a café.

Please check your bike before the ride, i.e. tyre pressure, chain and brakes. Bring some money for emergencies and café stops and/or post ride refreshments. Don't forget snacks to keep your energy levels up and a drink to consume en-route.

Don't forget to bring a small toolkit to fit your bike and a spare inner tube in case you get a puncture. It is much easier to replace the tube than to repair a tube, especially if you have a slow puncture.

A glorious day for cycling today, thank you to everyone who turned up, it was very nice to see you all. uring the lunch, some people agreed to organise another social event, a meal out, on the 23rd April. Further details will be sent out when I receive them. Thanks to people involved for agreeing to do this. I’m sure those of you, who were there at the meal last year, would agree, that this will turn out to be a very enjoyable evening out.

For those of you who did not make to today’s Spokes Ride, I thought it might be a washout, as I had to pedal down Comiston Road in the lashing rain. But I got to the Usher Hall and it had stopped. That was the only rain we had today.

Ride Stats:

Distance         54.4 km (38.8 miles)
Average Speed:   18.2 km/h (11.3 mph)
Total Climbing: 769 m (2522 ft)
Temperature varied from 7 to 9 deg Celsius (44.6 – 48.2 deg Fahrenheit)

The number of participants varied from 20 to 21 to 20 to 19 to 16!!!

We set off from the Usher Hall at around 10:20 and went along Fountainbridge and Dundee St turning up Harrison Road, along Harrison Gardens and Ogilvie Terrace to join the Canal. Along the canal we were joined by a Jenny. We followed the Canal to Wester Hailes, apart from one person who thought they might like to test my voice. She eventually rejoined us so we could go through the new Westburn Estate and take the road through to Baberton Mains. We crossed the railway at Whitelaw and then we headed through Heriot Watt Riccarton Campus. The temperature had now reached a balmy 7 deg C, so I was able to remove layers as we trundled along Long Dalmahoy Road. At a road junction, a Jenny who joined us left us, as she was a little unwell.  The rest of us had a straightforward journey through Kirknewton and East Calder, arriving at Mid Calder around Midday.

We had a little pre-lunch visit to the Almondell Country Park, where CTC DA Sec decided to go home. We headed to the Torphichen Inn. Unfortunately, the cook wasn’t there, so we had to go around the corner to the Black Bull. Neil TBC decided to go home, taking 2 others, so 15 people dined (one had a packed lunch). Thanks to Stef who treated me to a Chocolate Fudge Cake, and thanks to Mike Bonar who kindly bought me a half pint of IPA.

After lunch, we got back in to the swing of things by heading up to Pumpherston, historic centre of the Scottish Shale Oil industry, as could be seen by the bings. We head along Drumshoreland Road, the down to Broxburn. At Broxburn we headed up Geendykes Road, the B8020, watching people trying to ascend the Bings on off-road motorbikes. We passed through Niddry, Stef taking the opportunity to insult as he had bought me dessert, along past Niddry Castle, taking the minor road to join the B9080 to take to Kirkliston. At Kirkliston, we took the railway path to Carlowrie, then followed the minor road down to Cramond Brig, where we said our goodbyes. Form there, most of us took the cycle route in to Edinburgh.

Thanks again to everyone who turned up.

Hope to see you all on the next Spokes Ride on the 4th April 2004 to see in the new financial year.
