Next Spokes Ride

Sunday 3rd July 2022. Meet at 10:00 outside the Usher Hall, Lothian Rd.

Destination to be decided on Wednesday. Distance will be around 70km (42 miles). Lunch in a café.

Please check your bike before the ride, i.e. tyre pressure, chain and brakes. Bring some money for emergencies and café stops and/or post ride refreshments. Don't forget snacks to keep your energy levels up and a drink to consume en-route.

Don't forget to bring a small toolkit to fit your bike and a spare inner tube in case you get a puncture. It is much easier to replace the tube than to repair a tube, especially if you have a slow puncture.

A Spring in a Pedal Turn

"In spring and summer winds may blow,
And rains fall after, hard and fast;
The tender leaves, if beaten low,
Shine but the more for shower and blast" ~
In spring and summer winds may blow, Walter Savage Landor

A wonderful May ride was attended by 16 people, and we eventually went to Linlithgow. The forecast was not so great, showers and a stiff breeze, but the breeze wasn't too bad, and we didn't experience a single drop of rain. A very fresh feeling day, and wonderful to be out and about on a bike.

Adventurous Learning

"When you set out on your journey to Ithaca,
pray that the road is long,
full of adventure, full of knowledge" ~
Road to Ithaca, Constantine Peter Cavafy, 1911

The April ride was very busy, 28 people turned up, and we went to Aberlady in East Lothian. Obviously the gorgeous sunny spring day, cool in the shade, warm in the sun, resulted in "Hey it's Spring, better get rid of these cobwebs.". It was very nice to see you all. Thank you for making the ride a pleasant one to lead.

Double the fun

"You only live twice,
Or so it seems.
One life for yourself,
And one for your dreams." ~
You Only Live Twice (Song from the James Bond Film)

A bit of a double life this month as I went to Montgenevre in France for a well deserved break. I'm back now, so I'd better finish the Spokes Rides report. Fourteen people turned up for the February ride. The February ride is one of my favourites. The weather is generally kind and company jolly. A ride to blow cobwebs away if you missed the mince pies from January and get you out of hibernation.

A ride between seasons

"In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer." ~ Albert Camus (1913 - 1960)

Thank you to everyone who turned up for this ride. Depending on when, or where, you counted, and due to the recurrence of punctures, there were 14, 19 or 17 people on the March Spokes Ride to Linlithgow. A brisk westerly slowed the pace down as well, but in these circumstances, you have to slow down the pace again. Winter is no time to stop and get cold. We do wait, only in winter we move at the same time as well. However, the punturee and companion decided to explore Cramond.

On a Bicycle, you always ride home

"Ma maison c'est votre maison
Entre mes quatre murs de glace
Je mets mon temps et mon espace
À préparer le feu, la place" ~
L'hiver, Gilles Vigneault

Thanks to everyone who turned up. 21 turned up for this first ride of 2009, when we went to East Lothian. This was probably due to the lovely weather, cold and dry, and the promise of Mince Pies. Another cold, fresh, sunny, day to be out on the bike. The sun appears as a cold white object lighting the way, but offers no heat. The sky is the light blue that only seems to occur in Scotland in winter. Isn't it nice that in these "Credit Crunch" times that you can have fun for a small amount of money.
