"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
-- Mark Twain
Welcome to SnowCycle, a website based on my interests in cycling and skiing.
This website has some reports and photographs from the Spokes Sunday Bike Rides that I lead. If you're interested in coming along, we meet on the 1st Sunday of the Month at the Usher Hall, Lothian Road at 10am. Spokes is the Lothian cycle campaign, so our main efforts and activities are in the council areas of Edinburgh, East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian.See Spokes for more info.
I am currently working on this website, but old stuff can be seen at http://www.snowcycle.biz/ or http://www.snowcycle.org.uk/
I have also added some details of winter holidays I have made, as well as adding photos from these trips. If you live in Edinburgh, and want to come along (there's no joining fee!!!!), let me know.
Warm Regards.

"All creatures who have ever walked have wished that they might fly. With highwheelers a flesh and blood man can hitch wings to his feet." ~ Karl Kron, Ten Thousand Miles on a Bicycle
16 people turned up for the Spokes Ride to Gifford. A weather forecast that was not too good turned out to be not as bad as expected, but I was prepared for it. However, it was a very pleasant ride, rolling and climbing slowly in the morning, descending in the afternoon, followed by a damp spell on the way home.

"Nothing is less real than realism;
Details are confusing.
It is only be selection, elimination, by emphasis
that we get at the real meaning of things." ~
10 people turned up for the Summer Spokes Ride. A lovely ride of just over 50 miles to Muiravonside Country Park in Falkirk District. The BBC weather forecast was wrong, and we only experienced a couple of light showers. The rest of the time, it was quite pleasant. Yes, it was breezy on the way out, but that's the way it should be. Cycling home in to the wind after already having have cycled for 1/2 a day, can be incredibly tiring. Generally a ride of four halves.

The changable weather continues, so as two Spokes Rides have been cancelled, I am making the first Long Spokes Ride just a little less long, about 95km, or 60 miles in old money. One person did turn up for the July Spokes Ride, but the weather did turn out for the worse on Sunday :-(

"When a cyclist roams freely on his steely steed in the Godly world of nature, his heart rises and he bewonders the splendor of creation." ~
A cool ride down to the Usher Hall, despite the thermometer registering 11 deg C, the NE wind was extremely keen. Twenty four keen people turned up to go to Aberlady in East Lothian. There was cloud, but it is May, light is more apparent. There are a few thousand runners in the city.

"Daffy-down-dilly came up in the cold, through the brown mould although the March breeze blew keen on her face, although the white snow lay in many a place." ~ Anna B. Warner ("Amy Lothrop")
The Easter Ride went to Aberdour in Fife, 13 people turned up on Easter Sunday. Hard to believe that a few days before, I had been unable to ride my bike because of snow. It had nearly all melted, and the Easter ride was mostly quiet and compact. At least the weather was comfortable and quiet.
